Next revolution of Web browser

Posted by Devs on May 26, 2008

In a recent days I could see huge transitions from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer(IE) to Mozilla’s Firefox web browser as they are keep coming up with innovative features. Despite IE had rival at every period of time from a way back 1990s, this time the level of domination and garbing attention has become drastic.

Firefox has been steadily eroding Internet Explorer’s claim of superiority by its distinct ways listed below,

  • Open source and Free to use
  • More transparent and secure
  • Huge number of cool add-ons(extensions)
  • Lot of innovative features
  • Highly customizable and extendable
  • Much faster

and I would also tell that IE itself has burnt its finger by,

  • Releasing IE 7 with Microsoft’s Genuine Advantage Validation(later they made it optional)
  • Not enough proactive on adding features
  • No major changes in its newer version while comparing with its competitors

Both are getting ready with their new releases, will wait and see that who is going to win this battle. Anyway at the end of the day, they are keep taking up our online experience to new heights.

Even you can try firefox once, still if you are not. Lots of cool add-ons!

I do agree on your thoughts about Firefox and IE, though you misssed out one important competitor.

“Opera” – The most secure browser available in the market today. The browser is lite. It’s just fast. And ofcourse it’s free.

Features – Most of them are opera only. You won’t find in other browsers.
    1) Mouse gestures and customizable shortcuts.
    2) Voice control.
    3) Torrent support.
    4) In-built downloader.
    5) In-built Mail client.
    6) Opera widgets.
    7) Full-Text History search.
    8) Notes.

    Highlights
    1) The only windows based browser to pass “ACID test 3″standards.
    2) It’s more customizable than any other browser.
    3) Opera is also the most prefered and used mobile browser.

Windows or Linux – My choice is always OPERA.

    This is opera: http://operawatch.com/news/2007/09/opera-vs-firefox-vs-internet-explorer-picture.html

Firefox is cool and IE copied lot of features shamelessly from them. even though there are some faults in Firfox where certain websites wont open. I have undergone this situation many times. if we leave this small factor, then its a cool product. Theme is an excellecent option here..

From companies point of view the market share erosion is a serious problem as you all know the revenue generators are the Google search bar inbuilt in the coming versions of the browsers. So it will direct hit them.. lets wait and watch …

Yes Sri, I completely accept your point. Opera is the most preferred browser in the mobile platform.

I focused Firefox since it is going to be the quite popular browser next to IE in the computer space. I would also like include w3schools’s browser statistics(I forgot in my post)

    http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

You covered all the pin points about Opera, Thanks for your comment.

    Hi Deva,
I am glad to see the above mentioned features about Firefox but addition to that I would like to share one more plug-in “Firebug “ which is supported by Firefox browser.
The Firebug extension for Mozilla Firefox allows the debugging, editing, and monitoring of any website’s CSS, HTML, DOM, and JavaScript, and provides other web development tools. Firebug’s official website has a complete guide to what it can do.
Firebug was written by Joe Hewitt, one of the original Firefox creators.
The Firebug plugin YSlow is a web development tool and analyzes web pages and tells you why they’re slow based on the rules for high performance web sites. It offers
    • Performance report card
    • HTTP/HTML summary
    • List of components in the page
    • Tools including JSLint
