Thougts on recession…

Posted by Devs on April 23, 2009

I am not left alone when entire world is babbling about the latest buzz word even more dangerous word. Obviously it is ‘Recession’.

Recession

As always when I heard this word first time in the early 2008 I didn’t realize its real impact (even now) would be huge like this. But latter on I start realizing as and when new bankruptcy and job loss keep mounting to new heights.

Though its kinda cyclic process during the course of financial era and we have collected enough historical statistics about the impact and recovery, we could not prevent this, yes we could NOT. When we ask why, the obvious answer from all around the world is ‘always its bubbling in a very unlike form’ I agree that. But what are the measures we have taken to prevent this? Is prevention measures really required? Are those prevention measures will stop us from taking high risk which interns stops high growth. As per my knowledge I feel the answer is ‘Yes’. High growth always comes with high risks.

Here I would take a moment to look at in a very optimistic way, instead of discussing all boring effects and impacts of this recession.

recession

1. First and foremost, it gives us chance(or sometimes forces) to clean our entire financial systems once in a while

2. All conceiving and conceived bubbles are bursting one to the next; to my knowledge I would say real-estate as a classical example.

3. More holes in our financial system are coming to lime light, in which we can fix and come up with best legacy system.

4. It’s alerting that revamping our system to make it adapt to new generation time to time is paramount.

I have few crazy (more sensible) questions too…

  • Where does all these huge money is being dumped?
  • How dare this financial system which boasting itself allows to direct/re-direct money to limited hands?
  • What are the measures being taken to find out and re-distribute this money? Merely I have seen only one attempt which was taken by Obama, in which he asked to pay 80% of their bonus (that they got from stimulus package) as a tax.
  • Are all corporates really feeling this heat? I got this doubt because while giving pink slip to many employees, in side-line the same corporate board declaring triple digit bonus to its stake holder along with double digit growth. Don’t they feel employees are their back bone and it is indeed their sole responsibility to save them when they are in difficult time? They must remember that their employees also one among the corner stones to success of the company.

“Real leaders are ordinary people with extraordinary determination.”

Posted by Devs on November 7, 2008

A great leaders are always stands out from rest of the mass. I am very much inspired with the speech given by our one of visionary Indian politician Narendra Modi. Frankly speaking I would not have impressed at this level if the same speech had given by any one of Indian IT leaders. He is very confident that Innovation and R&D is the key to growth and to save Indian IT slowdown from global crisis. He is not just only to attract industrial project but also to drive our IT industry in a all new different path.

Here below is the vibrating speech given by him on titled ‘Come out with ‘Nano’ of IT’ in Bangalore, an Indian silicon valley.

modi

He exhorted the Indian IT industry to emerge from the ‘comfort zone’ of providing low-end services and challenged it to come out with a ‘Nano’ of IT for the masses.
Majority of the revenue for the Indian IT industry continues to come from low value addition jobs like manpower provisioning and low-end support services, Modi said in Bangalore at the ICT event Bangalore IT.biz.

“The industry should come out of this comfort zone and engage itself in creating value for the company and also adding value to the manpower which is working for it”, he said,  inaugurating the exhibition of the three-day event, in which Gujarat is the partner State.

Modi stressed that the IT industry has to reinvent itself, must focus on innovations, and on systems rather than being comfortable with services.

“It must invest in R&D. It must develop sustainable products.

“While services may offer marginal advantage over costs, the payoffs against the product development are huge”, he said, adding, “it was understandable till the industry was trying to stand on its feet, but now having grown healthy, it must show foresight.”

“Why cannot we develop MS Windows in India, or a Google or a Yahoo? If an Indian can develop Hotmail and given that 30 per cent of Windows developers may well be Indians in any case, the task does not look all that difficult. What is required is a leap of faith, a paradigm shift”, he said.

Modi said it is that leap of faith which is going to give India ‘A Nano Car in One Lakh Rupees’. Even the most optimist Indians did not believe that it could be done.

This (nano car) has potential to revolutionise the automobile industry and put India among the innovative best in the world, he said.

“With all the abundance of Indian IT talent available on tap, when is it that we will come out with a ‘Nano’ of IT, with holistic and accessible solutions for the mankind”, the chief minister asked.

Noting that the current global slowdown has challenged the Indian IT-BPO industry also, he said it’s a rare opportunity for the IT industry to show its capacity in sustaining the growth momentum.

In addition to the outsourcing model, the IT industry has to look at the growth opportunities in the domestic market. There is still a vast Indian platform which remains untouched with this revolution.

Modi said inspite of phenomenal growth, the productivity of the Indian IT industry is quite low. Even today, the average realisation per employee of an Indian IT company is one twentieth, or lower, of the global leaders like Microsoft or HP.

Dell Inspiron 1525 Review

Posted by Devs on October 6, 2008

It’s time to comment out about my laptop after using for around 2 months of time.

Pros:

  • Extreme level of customization in product configuration
  • Decent slim and low weight in this price range laptops
  • Very good price tag, Dell has come down lot in fixing price margin to attract more consumer, a win-win strategy. Sony Vaio has to learn from this.
  • Solid performance and features
  • Sleek keyboard and enou options for further expansion
  • Touch sensitive media control buttons
  • Integrated SIM slot for mobile broadband. Hop still lot more guys are not aware of that, You can find this mobile like SIM slot right behind the laptop battery. just remove the battery and insert your GPRS activated SIM into it and follow the procedures given by your network service provider to surf net.

Cons:

  • First and foremost, Speaker. I’m very much disappointed with speakers. One needs to think of alternative choice who will be listening to music as you do your work. I’m damn sure, Sony Ericsson mobile speakers will eat this, yep really.
  • Heat, I’m absorbing enou heat in my lap.
  • Mouse pad, it is getting stuck up but very rarely.
  • Then off course, Graphics card; a small piece is missing out here. Despite you do not feel lagging graphics in normal mode, definitely you would while going for Vista Aero theme or while playing games

But over all I am very much happy with this laptop and its rocking performance. A great value for money.

I’m very proud of these regular bloggers…

Posted by Devs on September 20, 2008

After long time, here in this post my target is going to be (my)laziness, but wisely doing that in a very optimistic way.

I’m very proud of people in the world whose is updating their blog regularly, from born-baby to CEO of the company. including one of busiest man in the world Big-B, a well known bollywood super star. Congratulations to you all…

Even I took resolution while starting by blog that not to end up like what hap’d to my gym practice :) but almost reached that state., so this is an attempt to restart, will see the out come.

Fine, my analysis goes here with lot of Qs…How did they get more time? Where did they get from? Have more than 24hrs per day to spent? Not at all!! Then how could possible only to them? Better time management? or Much organized fellows?

Not at all!! What I realized in my experience is that one n only ‘Laziness’. One can have any number of schedules, any type of time management, any kind of organized. But I’m sure this Lazyne’s will chew everything.

then what is the solu??., no way to change immediately, even if hap’d it’s lasting only for very few days. So will take it as gradual change and see., how the progess is going to be.

Does techie need MBA?

Posted by Devs on July 11, 2008

I came across this article from siliconindia when I was thinking of stuffs to update in my blog. My last post also getting older and older and my in-born laziness and regular work did not give up few minutes to update my blog… hmm hope you understood :D decided to give some work for ctrl+c and v. But really very nice and informative article, So decided to share with you all… Thanks to Smarttechie publisher.

Here is the summary of that article…

There are still a few things left that Google can’t search, software can’t solve and mortals don’t understand. One such mystical thing is the perfect career. When it comes to something as important as your career, there is plenty of advice on offer and yet, there really is no sure shot at success. We at The SmartTechie have often wondered if management training was one way to ensure a good career?

Do techies need a Master in Business Administration (M.B.A) degree? Who better to answer that question than the gurus themselves…the people who have done the same thing you did, a little ahead of your time and went on to do wonders in the IT industry—the same industry that you probably work for.

Our findings were stunning: More than 80 percent of the bigwig techies or the gurus managing Indian and multinational IT companies do not have an M.B.A. Just one percent of the total IT jobs for engineers require M.B.A. And finally yet futuristically, with IT companies starting to offer product to Indian market, the MBA trend will snowball.

Just being B.E
It is clear that an M.B.A is not a requirement for engineering roles. Often engineers at the developer roles do not involve themselves in understanding and enhancing the business needs of an organization. “If an engineer has an intense desire to learn more about business side of the organization, then perhaps he should move on to do an M.B.A,” says Himanshu Singh, Executive Director, India & SAARC, Cadence Design Systems, who attended a four-month certificate program in management from Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI), Jamshedpur. He feels it gives a comprehensive understanding of businesses.

It is necessary to understand that a mid-rung position within an IT organization is often the forte of technology managers. These technology managers who handle responsibilities of project management and team leads need to have a strong footing on program and project management techniques. So, often a project management course is of greater use than an M.B.A.

Employees at the technology management level most often need great people management skills, which does not really need an M.B.A. Obviously implying that for the role of a project manager or operational manager, and people management skills can be acquired on the job too. Managers who go out to do an M.B.A at this juncture, come back to add value to their companies. Although the value is immense, they often lose out on the other aspects of a management degree like finance, business law—eventually forgetting due to non-usage. If they learn immediately after B.E.

One should know that in the IT industry, management is not just management of business per se but technology management also. Typically in a technology product company about 20 to 25 percent of its revenue is spent on research and development, which is counted as engineering activities such as coding, customer specification, designing, architecture amongst others. Hence, there is great opportunity for technical-managerial roles with the rest 75-80 percent. But an M.B.A is not a must.

Customer dating roles
As you grow within the organization, it is a clear sign that the organization is growing too. No longer would one just be doing isolated technical functions, like they did in start of their career. Seven years, on an average, after commencing an IT career with a pure technical role one would definitely be involved with clients and delivery. When one touches those boundaries, it is often advisable to take up an M.B.A.

For techies moving onto higher responsibilities it all boils down to people and time management, along with resources and cost management. Clearly these demand a different skill sets acquisition than pure technical knowledge.
For roles such as tech marketing, where customer interaction is their bread-and-butter business, an M.B.A will add a significant value.

Even in roles such as a delivery manager, an M.B.A is a plus point. To execute a project with the right delivery processes, a thorough knowledge of contract negotiations, and margins is required.

Killing your technical instincts just for some buzz surrounding managerial roles is often the biggest mistakes techies do. Avoiding herd-mentality and deciding whether you are fit for the technical track or management track is the call techies need to take. And this call, techies should understand, is based on ones aptitude and more importantly attitude.

Simple test for techies
Are you in love with the technology you work with? Are you inspired by the Bill Joys of Sun, Jerry Yangs of Yahoo, Sergey Brins and Larry Pages of Google? Do you love being part of the international techie community where you stand for something and love being recognized? If a techie nods the head in affirmation, then the candidate should continue doing what he’s doing and look for advanced technical degrees, especially in a particular technical domain and be the worldwide expert in that domain.

“Examples of Andy Grove, Craig Barrett of Intel will tell you that in high-tech industry it is not an M.B.A that counts but a PhD,” says Chinnu Senthilkumar, MD of SanDisk India, who does not hold an M.B.A. PhD gives you a great focus and specialization in one particular field, but M.B.A makes one a jack of all and master of none.
If the above doesn’t hold true for you then you are inclined towards business and M.B.A is a good option.

SWOT test
The other way to analyze what you need to be doing is a SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunities and threat) analysis. That is a good sign of knowing oneself better and being more adroit in handling themselves. But don’t forget to count your passion in.
Dr Vivek Mansingh, head of Dell R&D (India) advises to have a plan for your life like every organization has a plan with measurable timeframes. Follow the plan with perseverance and correct it when needed. Manage your own Inc. Collect the skills to make your Inc. succeed. The professional world is a complex collection of unique individuals, all struggling to advance their careers at all costs. But the successful ones should walk backwards from their vision and let not MBA be the end of the vision.

How does one know that he/she is a better manager than a techie?
“This can only happen via two basic processes. The informal intuitive one leads a person on to a path that defines itself over time. It comes from within. The other is a formal one where an organization or a mentor/tutor provides feedback that defines what you are and where you will go. Neither are perfect. Finally only time will tell,” Shiv Nadar, Founder HCL, Chairman & CEO HCL Technologies.

Does MBA mean higher pay scale?
The different pay scales for engineers possessing MBAs and those not in IT companies have been a hotly debated topic. There is a general perception that most Indian companies offer higher compensation to engineers holding an MBA. At the entry point a differentiation has to be made because of the additional qualifications possessed. However once the person is on the job it depends on how they deliver.

There are techies who earn more than some managers do. Some like Vijay Prasad, a senior developer at Siemens believes that management guys get paid double to that of a techie with the same experience. However, Raghavendra Prasad, Technical Marketing Manager at Sasken strongly disagrees that money doubles with just another management degree beside one’s name.

“IT engineers with an engineering and M.B.A degree will command 20 percent of premium 8 to 9 years after their entry into the industry. This was the same in Bay Area when I used to work a couple of years back,” says Vinod Mankala, HR Manager Cisco Systems India. And some of the country heads, without an MBA, earn close to Rs10 million (Rs 1 crore) annually!

More powerful movie with most powerful message!!!

Posted by Devs on June 13, 2008

Its just a 5min clip, but I’m damn sure it will influence you atleast for a day. Thanks to miniature-earth for this heart touching content and Ramz for sharing with me.

Just watch this movie and come back to the post.

Hmm., content may be over shadowed by the way of presentation, but the core message is “Appreciate what you have, And do your best for better world”. I am not asking to buy a T-Shirt thro paypal (dats upto your wish), but I kindly encourage everyone to help others in an all possible ways.

I am happy that India is going to be accommodated with a costliest individual house in the world, but on the other side I am very regret that another 25% of people struggling even without a hut to live.

As per the recent survey done by planning commission, still around 25% of people are below poverty line. Who is going to take care of them? Government? How much they can take care? Whole 25% of people? Government can’t burden fully at a single stretch as they wanted to look at 1/4th of total Indians but they can encourage social service activities in much better way.

As our finance minister Mr P.Chidambaram said in his recent industrial conference, every big organization/industry has to come forward and adopt few villages near to them. He doesn’t point only large organizations; he just requested them as they can reduce the rate of poverty aggressively. And also that will help to average our fairly uneven wealth atleast in a micro level.

Here I must quote and encourage Aspire’s polestar activities, just being ~450 employee company they adopted couple of panchayat elementary schools located near to siruseri, Chennai. Even I got a chance to help a 7yr old heart as my chris child :) thru those activities. I don’t bother either they are doing this as a service or just for their publicity, atlast it’s great pleasure from both the side.

Let’s chase our dream! And also let’s help to chase their dream..!

Next revolution of Web browser

Posted by Devs on May 26, 2008

In a recent days I could see huge transitions from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer(IE) to Mozilla’s Firefox web browser as they are keep coming up with innovative features. Despite IE had rival at every period of time from a way back 1990s, this time the level of domination and garbing attention has become drastic.

Firefox has been steadily eroding Internet Explorer’s claim of superiority by its distinct ways listed below,

  • Open source and Free to use
  • More transparent and secure
  • Huge number of cool add-ons(extensions)
  • Lot of innovative features
  • Highly customizable and extendable
  • Much faster

and I would also tell that IE itself has burnt its finger by,

  • Releasing IE 7 with Microsoft’s Genuine Advantage Validation(later they made it optional)
  • Not enough proactive on adding features
  • No major changes in its newer version while comparing with its competitors

Both are getting ready with their new releases, will wait and see that who is going to win this battle. Anyway at the end of the day, they are keep taking up our online experience to new heights.

Even you can try firefox once, still if you are not. Lots of cool add-ons!

Software product Vs application

Posted by Devs on May 10, 2008

As an outcome of my recent project change, I started my thinking more on this topic. When I look at my new product(project) I wonder how these people are thinking beyond out of the box to come up with such innovative features.

Yes, simply they included ‘Developer Tool Kit’(like we have in visual studio) as one of their features. with that you can customize the product in what ever way you want like customizing menus, dialogs, controls, databases, reports, etc.. This product has come up with extreme level of customization irrespective of different customers and their business. Added to that it carries all the legacy that comes with C++ like low weight – less expensive application. By packing those incredible features they are dominating in their industry.

While looking at that, the level of ability on dominating software industry by product is keep going up.

Lets start with the facts.,

In application,

  • It is always single client specific
  • Bounded with limited development cost
  • So obviously the level of quality will be questionable
  • Only focus on given environment
  • Very expensive

in the other hand while coming to product,

  • High degree of focus on innovation
  • Much more robust product
  • Highly scalable and flexible
  • Open to evolution and interoperability
  • Diversified user and environment
  • Becoming more and more innovative from their inputs/comments
  • Above all, it is expensive product at low price.

These features has become mandate to grab huge market, so obviously successful products are carrying them to the industry.

Your valuable comments on my view please…
